Derelict Trap Rodeo

Derelict Trap Rodeo

Do you have a boat and a desire to help clean up Biscayne Bay from derelict fishing gear? Then join us in this year's Derelict Trap Rodeo! During the blue crab, stone crab, and lobster trap season closure, we'll be going out on the water to remove any remaining derelict traps. You can bring family and friends out on your boat to help look for buoys at the surface - they could be derelict traps! This type of cleanup is helpful to reduce the number of traps that are left out at the end of the season. Help us protect these ecologically important species in the bay by removing ghost fishing gear!

We'll be leaving out of Matheson Hammock Park & Marina where you can drop you boat in. Or if want a land-based experience, you can participate in a land-based cleanup around the park!

Everyone will meet at the marina parking lot around 8:00am. If you are dropping your boat in, please plan to get there earlier for parking and securing a spot on the dock to tie up. If you will be driving your boat to the marina, you can park by the gas dock and walk over to the parking lot where we will gather for an orientation. At 8:30am, we will begin orientation where you will get a set of coordinates and instructions on what to look for when out on the water. We will send everyone off at 9:00am and give about three hours for searching and pulling traps. By 12:00pm, plan to be back at the dock for weigh-in of all collected traps and debris.

We will also have an opportunity to win prizes! The boat team with the most weight of debris will win a very special prize and bragging rights! The event will conclude by 1:00pm.

To support this effort in other ways, please consider also becoming a sponsor! If you are interested please visit this link or reach out to [email protected] for more information.

**If you are signed up as a boater, we'll be sending you an email with information about a Captain's Call the night before the event from 6-7pm! If you are unavailable for this meeting, we'll work with you to get you information on what to expect.

Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves

Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves

The Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve, was established by The State Of Florida for the purpose of preserving and enhancing Biscayne Bay and all natural waterways tidally connected to the bay in an essentially natural condition so that its biological and aesthetic values may endure for the enjoyment of future generations. Biscayne Bay is home to two state aquatic preserves, collectively known as Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves (BBAP). The first, Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve, was established in 1974 and runs the length of Biscayne Bay proper, from the headwaters of the Oleta River down to Card Sound near Key Largo. BBAP is about 64,607 submerged acres. This aquatic preserve (AP) is split in half by what is now called Biscayne National Park.
