VolunteerCleanup.Org: A Proud Leave No Trace Community Partner

As a proud Leave No Trace Community Partner, we are committed to educating and empowering the community to protect our environment through sustainable practices. Our focus extends to the pristine areas of Biscayne Bay and the Spoil Islands, where the battle against litter and pollution is crucial.

The 7 Principles of Leave No Trace

Our mission is guided by the 7 principles of Leave No Trace, which are essential for minimizing human impact on natural spaces:

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
  2. Travel on Durable Surfaces
  3. Dispose of Waste Properly
  4. Leave What You Find
  5. Minimize Campfire Impact
  6. Respect Wildlife
  7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors

The Problem: Too Much Trash in Biscayne Bay and Spoil Islands

One of the most critical principles for our work in Miami is improper disposal of waste.

Biscayne Bay and the Spoil Islands are beloved recreational areas for residents and visitors alike. Unfortunately, these areas have become hotspots for pollution due due to the increasing amount of trash left behind by boaters – primarily plastic bottles, polystyrene (some call it Styrofoam) and cans.

The consequences are significant:

  • Economic destruction: Biscayne Bay generates $64 Billion in economic activity from tourism, real estate and fisheries
  • Marine Life Endangerment: Marine animals, such as dolphins, sea turtles, and manatees, are at risk of ingesting or becoming entangled in trash.
  • Water Quality Degradation: Trash and debris can lead to the contamination of water, affecting both human health and the marine ecosystem.
  • Habitat Destruction: The natural habitats of various species are disrupted, leading to a decline in biodiversity.

Our Efforts

At VolunteerCleanup.Org, we tackle these challenges head-on through various initiatives:

  • Community Cleanups: Helping coordinate regular cleanups in Biscayne Bay and the Spoil Islands to remove litter and debris.
  • Educational Campaigns: Raising awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal and the impact of littering on our environment.
  • Partnerships and Collaborations: Working with local businesses, schools, and other organizations to promote sustainable practices and foster a culture of environmental stewardship.
